Check Test Training & Rescue

As a registered Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), you may have to take a check test at any time during your period of registration. As part of the Road Traffic Act 1988 ADI registration is subject to a condition that all ADIs will undergo a test of `Continued ability to give instruction’.

When you take a check test, your instructional ability will be assessed and graded by a suitably trained examiner according to the standards laid down by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

You will be given a grading at the end of the test - grade one being the lowest grade and grade six the highest. If you get grade three or lower, you will usually be asked to retake the check test. With the help of the 4 Wheelz check test rescue training we will help and retrain anyone who has been given a substandard grade.

Your 4 Wheelz Trainer will assess your core competencies, instructional techniques and characteristics and will discuss these with you thoroughly. The trainer will then adapt the training in order to target any weakness and help you to improve these areas. Your Trainer is highly qualified and is on the ORDIT register. This gives you the confidence that you are in safe hands with a knowledgeable Trainer. The Trainer will give you a good understanding of the grading system and how the grade is derived. 4 Wheelz Trainers have trained many Instructors, also Instructors who have been substandard and with the help of the Trainers have gone on to get excellent grades.

The check test is an opportunity:

After you have taken your first check test the examiner will inform you of their assessment. If your performance is satisfactory or better you will get a grade of between four and six. If your instruction is not acceptable you will be given an 'E' grade (Educational grade).

If you are given an 'E' grade, you will normally have to take the check test again within six months.

How You Are Assessed during an Approved Driving Instructor Check Test

When you take a check test as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), the examiner will assess the quality of your instruction. For each item, you will be given a rating on whether the subject was:

The examiner will judge how well you do in these three categories:

Core Competencies

This is where the examiner will assess your ability to identify faults, correctly analyse the cause and provide suitable solutions and instruction to rectify the fault.

Instructional Techniques

The examiner will look for you to provide a structured lesson using a variety of teaching skills to ensure efficient learning is taking place. Adjusting your level of instruction, controlling the lesson and planning of the lesson are some other areas the examiner will assess. Your ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner will be crucial.

Instructor Characteristics

Your manner, attitude and approach to your pupil will be looked at. The characteristics portrayed by yourself are important in the learning process. A good, relaxed learning environment will ensure a pupil will progress effectively.

How Check Tests Are Carried Out

A check test usually involves the examiner assessing your instructional ability by watching a lesson you give to a real pupil. If you don't have a pupil available, you may give instruction to someone who holds a full driving license, but you will need to make your level of instruction right for their ability. You cannot use another ADI as your pupil.

If you can't get a pupil for the check test, the examiner can act as the pupil and carry out a role-play check test.
